The Kaliganga River is one of the most reliable and action-packed river angling destinations in close proximity to Dhaka. Diverging from the great Garai-Madhumati system and feeding into the Dhaleshwari, the Kaliganga features deep underwater drop-offs, structural clay banks, and heavy currents that attract massive wild carp and apex river predators.
The Angling Landscape
What makes the Kaliganga unique is its seasonal transformation. During the monsoon, it turns into a raging torrent. However, from late September to January, as the water levels drop, the river stabilizes, exposing deep pools (Kums) where monster fish congregate.
The riverbed is a mix of sand and clay, punctuated by bamboo structures (Katha) submerged by locals to shelter fish. These structures are absolute magnets for predatory species.
Top Angling Spots along the Kaliganga
- Tarafpur & Beutha Ghat: Excellent shore-access points near Manikganj town. Ideal for overnight carp setups.
- The Confluence (Near Jhitka): Where local canals intersect with the main river. The mixing waters create highly oxygenated zones where predatory fish hunt small baitfish.
- Under the Kaliganga Bridge: The concrete pillars create artificial structure and break the heavy current, making it a prime ambush spot for casting artificial lures.
Winning Tactics for the Kaliganga
- Predator Luring (Boal & Chital): From October onward, use deep-diving minnows or heavy spoon lures cast close to clay banks and bridge pillars during dawn and dusk.
- Wild Carp Rigging: For giant Catla and Rui, use a heavy sinker setup (ledgering) to pin your bait to the riverbed against the current. Local anglers swear by a mix of roasted rice bran and fermented cheese to hold fish in the fast-moving water.
- Boat Scouting: Renting a traditional wooden engine boat from Beutha Ghat for the day allows you to troll the deep mid-river channels where the largest specimens hide.
